Trip Summary

This 4 day Amazon Lodge program can be done as a 'stand-alone' tour or can be added onto another travel program (such as a Peru land tour or Galapagos cruise) and it can be customized to your particular preferences. Departing from Lima or Cusco to Puerto Maldonado, it brings you deep into one of the most bio-diverse regions of the Amazon, a 200-hectare private reserve within the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve.  The comfortable lodge runs daily activity programs in the reserve and nearby, including hiking the trails while visiting wildlife blinds and clay licks, climbing an amazing 25 meter canopy tower, gliding around a a beautiful oxbow lake and of course exploring ample tributaries of the Tambopata- by day and by night! The lodge has 4 types of accommodations: Superior, Comfort, Suite & private Villa. Additional land arrangements and flights from either Cusco or Lima can be arranged on request. Journeys operate year round on request and can start or end on any day of the week, based on availability.

Please note: This itinerary is not a set program, rather a suggestion of daily programming.  When you arrive you will be given a set of activities and destinations to explore with available guides and you will be able to pick and choose based on your own preferences. There are huge variety of options to choose from including clay licks, animal blinds, observation tower, canoe rides, science lab, kids rainforest playground, forest trails and community farm visits.

Itinerary Day By Day

Day 1

Puerto Maldonado - Tambopata Reserve

A short flight takes you to Puerto Maldonado, situated deep in the Amazon rainforest. Here you will be met by your expert resident guide and taken to the docks to board a motorized dugout canoe for the trip to your jungle lodge. You will be able to leave any excess luggage in the safe deposit at their offices in Puerto Maldonado. This helps us keep the boats and cargo light. On arrival at the lodge you can choose from a number of activities: jungle hikes, canoe trips or simply taking a siesta and enjoying the sounds of the jungle from your hammock. [L/D]

Day 2

Tambopata Reserve

For the next two days there are a huge variety of options to choose from - clay licks, animal blinds, observation tower, canoe rides, science lab, kids rainforest playground, forest trails. The jungle is usually alive very early in the morning so try to get out pre-dawn and explore, as this will be your best chance to see wildlife. There are monkeys, birds, giant otters, ants galore, and a chance to learn about the rainforest from your expert resident guides either on foot or by dugout canoe. There is plenty of time to have a siesta to avoid the hottest part of the day. You can then take a canoe trip on a lake or explore more trails and catch a beautiful sunset over the Amazon basin. The evening can be free to relax or for those still eager to see wildlife there are two more options: either head out on foot in search of nocturnal mammals or take a canoe in the hope of glimpsing the rare black caimans that inhabit the nearby water. [B/L/D]

Day 3

Tambopata Reserve

Perhaps today you'll enjoy a 15 minute boat ride and 60 minute walk from Refugio Amazonas is a clay lick used both by parrots and parakeets.  From a blind you will see parrots and parakeets descend on most clear days to ingest the clay on a bank. Species such as Dusky headed and Cobalt winged Parakeet descend at this clay lick. With luck we will also see some or all of the following species in the early morning rush: Mealy and Yellow-crowned Amazons, Blue-headed Pionus, Severe macaw and Orange-cheeled (Barraband`s) Parrot. We visit the lick at dawn, when parrots are most active or in midmorning or early afternoon, when they are active. Aftler lunch, a few minutes hike from the lodge brings you to a beautiful old growth patch of Brazil Nut forest that has been harvested for decades (if not centuries).  Later, maybe visit a peccary clack lick to hopefully catch a glimpse of wild rain forest pigs that show up in herds of 5-20 individuals to eat clay in the late morning. Chances of spotting them are around 15%, but well worth the short hike. Other wildlife also shows up including deer, guan and parakeets. After dinner this evening, you will have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but difficult to see.  [B/L/D]
