Sea Level Rise

Sea level is rising — and at an accelerating rate

Human activities, such as burning coal and oil, have increased atmospheric concentrations of heat-trapping gases and caused the planet to warm. Land ice—glaciers, ice caps, and ice sheets—is shrinking at a faster rate in response to rising temperatures, adding water to the world's oceans. The rate and magnitude of the loss of ice sheets primarily in Greenland and Antarctica, will have the greatest effect on long-term sea level rise. Our past heat-trapping emissions have committed us to continued sea level rise over the coming decades, but our present and future emissions choices can affect the future pace at which it unfolds.

Scientists predict many Pacific Islands will be uninhabitable by 2030 due to rising sea levels, and for oceans to rise between 2.5 and 6.5 feet by 2100- enough to swamp many of the cities along the East Coast of the United States.

The film OCEANIA: Encounters at the Edge is a cinematic investigation of shifting land and sea. The film examines cultural, psychological and ecological phenomena along Pacific shorelines, beginning with the Island Republic of Kiribati. Here, a diverse and often underreepresented population is given a voice. Contrasting human time with geological processes, we reflect on humankind's connection to the ocean - as we fathom our shared future.
